BEAVER SPRINGS - As the Mifflin County Babe Ruth season nears the half way point, it appears that the 2012 pennant race is between two teams, Lewistown and Yeagertown.
On Saturday, Yeagertown (11-2) outscored Beaver Springs, 14-4, to cut the West's lead to a game and a half. Today, the top four teams play each other as Lewistown hosts third place Reedsville (7-5) and fourth place Strodes Mills (8-6) travels to Yeagertown.
Yeagertown scored nine runs in the third inning to snap a 1-1 tie and go on to defeat Beaver Springs, 14-4, in five innings.
Yeagertown sent 13 men to the plate in the third as it rapped out seven hits. Beaver Springs pitching helped the cause by hitting two batters along with a wild pitch and an error.
The first five batters in the third for Yeagertown smashed out hits as Nate Earnest opened with a single. Ty Bodtorf followed with a double and Devon Ammerman knocked in two runs with a single. Jordan Marshall continued the streak with an RBI double. Tate Harpster turned out to be hit number five when he reached on an infield single.
Before the inning was over Ernest had a sacrifice fly, Ammerman an RBI single and Kaegan Matthews was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Yeagertown finished with 11 hits with Bodtorf getting three and Marshall, Ammerman and Harpster each getting two.
Earnest went the distance for Yeagertown giving up just four hits, striking out 11 and walking eight.
The Springs came up with four singles from Colby Kreider, Andrew Bishop, Alex Hackenberg and Ashton Martin.
Belleville 17, Burnham 10
BELLEVILLE - Belleville used three pitchers to hold Burnham to six hits on Saturday in a 17-10 win.
Eddie Hamman worked the first three innings and picked up the win for the Big Valley club. Kyle Peachey took care of the middle three innings and Philip Yoder closed out the seventh with a scoreless effort. The trio combined for 11 strike outs and five walks.
Burnham led 6-2 going into the bottom of the third, but Belleville exploded for nine runs to take control of the game, 11-6.
Belleville sent 15 men to the plate in the third as Burnham gave up six walks along with four hits. Both of Peachey's hits came in the third on two singles and Isaac Maclay had a double. The other hit came from Tyler Bedelyon.
Belleville finished with 12 hits with three players getting two, Bedelyon, Peachey, Maclay and Dylan Billett. Both of Billett's hits went for extra-bases as he smashed two triples.
Javian Kauffman had two of the six hits for Burnham and Cole Baker, a rookie had Burnham's only extra-base hit, a double.
Centre County League
MILROY - The Coyotes picked up a pair of wins over hard-hitting Howard Sunday in Centre County League baseball action.
In the first game, a 6-3 Milroy win, the locals scored fourth in the fifth to overcome a 2-1 deficit as Tim Beck singled the Hunter Walker and Nick Beamenderfer doubled for a lead. Evan Pupo doubled to drive in the fourth run. Matt Lutz hit a solo homer in the sixth.
In the second game, Milroy overcame its own issues as the Coyotes stranded 14 base runners.
Again, it was the bottom of the fifth where a a four-run effort turned the tide. Chris Baker doubled and Dalton Long and Lutz each had base hits in the frame.
Coyotes manager Danny Knepp said Beamenderfer -an infielder - delivered a solid performance in a rare trip the mound that was crucial to the win.
"I was so excited Nick threw so well," he said. "It kept us in the game - Howard's one of the best hitting teams in the league."
Milroy (2-3) travels to Pleasant Gap Thursday. A Tuesday game at Lewistown will have to be rescheduled because of a field conflict.
