BEAVER SPRINGS - Shawn Michael Basom, 32, of Beaver Springs, passed away at 6:37 a.m. May 21, 2013, at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute.

Born Oct. 9, 1980, in Lewistown, Shawn was the son of Kim (Wagner) Basom, of Mifflintown, and Steve Basom, of Thompsontown, and beloved grandson of the late Lois (Baker) and Al Wagner, of Beaver Springs.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Dr. Donald E. Basom, of Lewistown, and stepgrandfather, Stewart Wright, of Thompsontown.

He is survived by: a sister, Stephanie (Basom) Herman and husband, Tim, of Troxelville; cousins, Jennifer (Wagner) and husband, Bobby Hockenberry, of Kreamer, Paul Leister and wife, Alicia, of McAlisterville, and Andrew Basom and Ali Basom, both of Enola; paternal grandmother, JoAnne Wright, of Thompsontown; stepfather, Terry Mingle, of Mifflintown; one nephew, Jesse Herman, of Troxelville; Rachel L. Beward (foster child of Kim Basom and Terry Mingle), of Mifflintown; stepmother, Susan Basom, of Thompsontown; stepgrandmother, Kay Basom, of Lewistown; aunts, Michelle (Wagner) Cohick, of Kreamer, Sandra Smith and husband, Mark, of Newport, and Sally Bomberger and husband, John, of Oakland Mills; and uncles, Melvin Leister, of Cocolamus, Scott Basom, of Thompsontown, and Dr. Stuart Basom and wife, Joanne, of Enola.

He was a 1998 graduate of West Snyder High School, where he was an all-star soccer and basketball player. He attended Pennsylvania College of Technology, in Williamsport, and California University of Pennsylvania. He worked at Northern Tier Juvenile Detention Facility and Hope Enterprise, and as an inspector at Wood-Mode, Inc.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a fan and participant of nearly all sports, and an inspiration for all the people whose lives he touched. He loved his labrador mix, Corgan. He enjoyed spending time with friends and attending Penn State football games.

In 2007, he created the charity Cycling for Cancer, through which he bicycled more than 100 miles throughout Snyder County and beyond to raise more than $4,000 for cancer research and survivors. In 2008, he was master of ceremonies for the Relay for Life Walk in Beaver Springs. In 2010, he participated in the Livestrong Foundation bike ride near Philadelphia, completing the 42-mile circuit.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Christ Church, Beaver Springs, with Pastor John Poulette officiating. Interment will be in St. John's "Black Oak Ridge" Cemetery, McClure.

Family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

Arrangements are by Pheasant Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. Third St., Suite A, Williamsport, PA 17701.
