BURNHAM - Burnham Borough Council passed an ordinance at its regular Monday meeting that will lead to a gradual increase in sewage rates to help repay a loan for updates to the wastewater treatment plant.
The exact rates will be determined by the council at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. June 3 at the Burnham Borough Building.
According to the ordinance, sewage rates will increase gradually for customers, rather than at once. The frequency of rate hikes has yet to be announced.
The council also passed a workers' compensation ordinance which authorizes the president of the Burnham Fire Co. to determine the other duties of the members of the fire company.
The original ordinance stated drills, maintaining equipment and any other duties were covered under workers compensation for volunteer firefighters. This amendment clarified 'other duties' and put that decision up to the fire company president.
In other business, the council also hired two lifeguards for the Burnham Pool but said it is looking for two additional lifeguards.
