LEWISTOWN - After a long hard fought battle with cancer, Shirley J. Johnson, was able to finally rest on April 9. Shirley attacked cancer with the same dogged determination and stubbornness with which she approached life, never complaining but forging forward.

For almost 25 years, Shirley lived and worked on the family farm of her partner, John Eyster, until he passed away in 1999. She worked as a bartender in Lewistown for many years, retiring in 2000 from the City Fire Co.

She spent her last days in peace, surrounded and loved by her children, in the home of her daughter, Sonya Riden and husband, Jeffrey, of Reedsville. She will be greatly missed by Sonya and Jeff and by her daughter, Paula Johnson and partner, Bettina Ring, of College Park, Md., and her son, Craig Johnson and wife, Kelli, of Lewistown.

She dearly loved her grandchildren, Andrew Curry and wife, Merry, Justin Riden and wife, Celesta, Jess Riden, Chad Curry and wife, Olivia, and Paige and Maxie Johnson, as well as her four great- grandchildren, Anna and Isaac Curry and Silas and Sydney Riden.

Shirley enjoyed watching the Game Show Network and cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Phillies and the Pirates. And, she loved sitting outside at her home visiting with neighbors and dear friends.

Shirley grew up in Huntingdon County and moved with her three children to Lewistown in 1968. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna Mae and Clarence Jackson, and siblings, Arvella, Armilda, Bob, Victor and Donna. She is survived by siblings, Harry Jackson and wife, Ruth, Donnie Jackson and wife, Florence, Shirley's special friend, as well as Judy Cummins and husband, Terry.

The family is truly grateful to all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who looked after Shirley to make her comfortable in her last days. They will celebrate Shirley privately and ask that if you wish to honor her life, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
