Pension vote to wait, Philly schools bill won't

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A key Republican lawmaker says Pennsylvania House GOP leaders plan to postpone a vote on public pension legislation backed by Gov. Tom Corbett until the fall and to fast-track legislation to help Philadelphia public schools plug a crippling deficit.

Bucks County Rep. Gene DiGirolamo said Wednesday he won the commitments before he agreed to undo a procedural maneuver that had derailed a vote on the pension bill a day earlier.

The moves come as House Republicans try to wrap up a rocky spring session for them and to stop it from dragging farther into summer.

DiGirolamo opposes the pension bill and says he wants an opportunity to improve it.

House Republican leaders had threatened to block the Philadelphia schools legislation unless Philadelphia Democrats signed on to the pension bill.
