HARRISBURG (AP) - A late winter storm brought a messy mixture of rain, sleet and snow to much of Pennsylvania just days before spring begins.

The messy weather began Monday morning and was expected to continue into today in some areas.

An employee from Mifflin County Emergency Dispatch said there were 17 car accidents Monday with a few minor injuries reported.

Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown said officers responded to six accidents. Other stranded drivers were able to free their vehicles without police assistance.

A wintry mix also hit much of western Pennsylvania, where icy conditions prompted the Pittsburgh Public Schools and about 60 other southwestern districts to delay classes.

Locally, many area schools were dismissed early because of the icy conditions caused by the storm.

Sentinel reporter Dan Pietropaolo contributed to this report.
