HERSHEY - Same site. Same opponent. Same round. Same outcome? Hopes are high for the District 3 Class A runner-up Greenwood, who defeated Sullivan County in first-round play of the 2011 PIAA championships at the Milton Hershey Spartan Center, 42-26. The two teams will face off today at 5 p.m.
The Wildcats will look to learn from their mistakes made in the District 3 Class A title which they lost to Lebanon Catholic 52-51, and capitalize on Sullivan County's weaknesses, which also gave up its District 4 championship in a 37-32 loss to St. John Neumann.
"We have been working on things (at practice) that we didn't do well last Friday and trying to clean some things up," Greenwood coach Kent Houser said.
It should be a brawl as each team brings experience to the big stage. The Griffins will send three starters to the hardwood who played in the 2011 matchup.
Greenwood will bank on its scoring leader, Ryan Kerstetter as well as teammates Joshua Ferguson and Adam Harrison for the bulk of the scoring production as the team makes its title run.
The Wildcats (21-4) are hoping for a repeat performance of the 2011 matchup, but the Griffins (22-3) will bring their size, which Houser said will be their biggest challenge.
IF YOU GO
Greenwood faces Sullivan County at Milton Hershey, 5 p.m. today.
"They're big," Houser said. "They have about two kids who are about 6' 5" who are going to give us some trouble."
The matchup may be Greenwood's most difficult of the season, but with advancement in the PIAA championship on the line, every team will come ready to battle.
The Griffins led at the half of their district championship, but they eventually fell for the third time this season to St. John Neumann. Sullivan County boasts three starters who average double digits scoring in Conner Wylie (14.1), Derek Wilkins (13) and Kelby Mullen (12.8). The Wildcats will be on the lookout for Sullivan County's Zach Meyer (8.8 ppg), who at 6' 6", can shoot the lights out from three-point land. Meyer drained 59 treys this season, nine coming in one game against Bucktail.
