Freeda Gaynell Wood

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Freeda Gaynell Wood, 84, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Blue Ridge Hospice, in Winchester, Va.

Born Dec. 7, 1928, in LaJose, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Clair and Vella Viola (McGarvey) Barrett.

She was a charter member of Berkeley Baptist Church, in Berkeley Springs. She was a graduate of Clearfield Senior High School, in Clearfield. Freeda was a dedicated volunteer with Morgan County Red Cross Blood Drives, had served as both a Girl Scout troop leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother and she enjoyed bowling.

She is survived by: two sons, Kenneth Duane Wood, of West Columbia, S.C., and Ronald Thomas Wood, of Berkeley Springs; two daughters, Susan Jean Witt, of Nashville, Tenn., and Barbara Ann Hands, of Lexington Park, Md.; two sisters, Janet Ruth Klingler, of Warrensville, S.C., and Kathy Mae Wulff, of Madison, Wis.; three brothers, Thomas Barrett, of Grampian, David Arthur Barrett, of LaJose, and Joseph White, of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Raymond Kenneth Wood, of West Columbia, Ronald Thomas Wood II, of Berkeley Springs, Jennifer Lynn Carbaugh, of Hagerstown, Md., Abby Michele Wood, of Berkeley Springs, Jason Paul Fitzmaurice, of Las Vegas, and David Wayne Hands II, of Lexington Park; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Gilbert James "Woody" Wood, on Jan. 10, 2000; one son, Robert James Wood; and two sisters, Helen Jane Barrett and Elizabeth Jean Eamigh.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Berkeley Baptist Church, 172 Winchester Grade Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Everett Powell officiating. Interment will be held at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in William Lind Memorial Cemetery, in Lewistown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and one hour prior to the service Tuesday, at the church.
