They are old. They are young.
They work long, hard hours.
They do it to help others, to give back to their communities, to fill lonely hours in their days, or just because they feel it is the right thing to do.
For many organizations and agencies in the Juniata Valley, these are the people who make it happen.
Without volunteers, may local services and programs could not exist. Volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes doing tasks, both highly-skilled and mundane, to make good things happen in the Juniata Valley - things that benefit our youth, the less fortunate or for the common good of the community. Volunteers bring positive things to the Juniata Valley that we might otherwise have to do without.
The Sentinel's annual Juniata Valley magazine this year will take a look at those volunteers who quietly make good things happen. "Making It Happen: Volunteers in the Juniata Valley" will be published on Feb. 23. In the special edition, our reporters will tell the stories of many local people from all walks of life and all age groups, from school age children to active adults well past retirement age, who volunteer for a variety of causes.
Most volunteers humbly go about their tasks asking for nothing in return, but receiving more in their hearts that any paycheck could offer. They do it because they care, not for the recognition.
Telling their stories is our way of thanking our local volunteers and, perhaps, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
We know that for every story our reporters find, there are many more out there, so we are offering our readers the opportunity to tell those stories, too.
If you represent an organization or agency that depends on volunteers, or know a special volunteer, we'd love to hear from you. We invite you to submit short essays about your volunteers, and/or a photo or two, for possible publication in the special section.
Please email your submissions to me at firstname.lastname@example.org; mail them to me at Jane Cannon Mort, The Sentinel, P.O. Box 588, Lewistown, PA 17044; or drop them off at our office at the corner of Sixth Street and Summit Drive in Pleasant Acres, Lewistown. If you have any questions, please call me at 248-6741, ext. 115.
Submission deadline is Jan. 14.
And don't forget to thank a volunteer for "making it happen" in the Juniata Valley.
