Second half surge puts Huskies on top

CARLISLE - The Mifflin County girls basketball team had some trouble with intensity in the first half of of the Huskies Mid-Penn Conference matchup against Carlisle on Wednesday. But in the second half, the Huskies made up for any first half deficiencies, and won the game, 73-37.

"We really came after them in the second half," Mifflin County coach Kevin Kodish said.

Kodish didn't exaggerate.

At the half, the score was tied at 28-28. By the end of the game, Mifflin County won by a margin of 36 points.

Mifflin County was helped by Ashleigh Williams and Olivia Halfpenny, who had 16 and 18 points respectively.

Kodish mentioned, however, that he was proud of the way the whole team rallied in the second to take the win.

"Overall I'm pleased with the team's entire effort the second half," Kodish said.

The Huskies won the JV game 35-30.

Mifflin County (4-2, 2-2) hosts State College Friday.

Girls basketball

Jersey Shore 45, Midd-West 26

JERSEY SHORE - The Midd-West girls basketball team went behind 15-4 in the first quarter against Heartland Athletic Conference opponent Jersey Shore, and was never able to find a lead in the 45-26 loss.

In the fourth quarter the Mustangs were able to match Jersey Shore's eight points, but it had no impact on the end result.

Midd-West's Allie Camp had a team-high 9 points. Jersey Shore's Kayla Allen had a game-high 18.

The Midd-West JV team lost 50-20.

Midd-West (1-2) hosts Selinsgrove on Saturday.

West Branch 55, Mount Union 49

MOUNT UNION - Mount Union had a slow start in girls basketball action Wednesday, and it cost the Trojans the game in the 55-49 loss to Inter-County Conference opponent West Branch.

"That's the story of us the entire year," Mount Union coach Jenny Cunningham said. "We start out slow, and then by the time we pick it up it's too late."

Cunningham also said her team's turnovers - 27 total - took its toll on the turnout of the game.

"We had so many uncontested turnovers for no reason," Cunningham said.

Tynita Whites led the Trojans in scoring with 18.

Mount Union (3-3, 1-2) plays in the Juniata College Holiday Tournament on Wednesday.

Boys basketball

Bald Eagle Area 55, Mount Union 47

WINGATE - The Mount Union boys basketball team started its non-league matchup against Bald Eagle Area strong, battling back from a first quarter deficit to take the lead in the second, but ultimately succumbed to the Bald Eagles, 55-47.

The Bald Eagles' 11-2 scoring run right after the break is what eventually sunk the Trojans.

Mount Union coach Joe Komir said that Bald Eagle Area came out and hit the shots it needed to make in the second half, and his team could never quite recover.

Bald Eagle Area's Dennis Fisher had a game-high 18 points. Mount Union's B.J. Loner had a team-high 9.

In the JV matchup, Mount Union fell, 52-39.

Mount Union (4-2, 1-1) travels to West Branch on Friday.

Wrestling

Juniata 47, Halifax 27

MIFFLINTOWN - The Juniata grapplers came out with a Tri-Valley League win over Halifax on Wednesday to a final score of 47-27.

Indians with pins included Ty Treaster, Patrick Fitzgerald, Richie Gilson, Luke Nanna and Jared Benner.

Juniata's Adam Barrick had a technical fall at 2:25 in his bout against Dalton Rode.

Juniata travels to the Conestoga Valley Tournament on Dec. 28.

Junior high

Girls basketball

9th grade team: Mifflin County 47, Carlisle 13. Katelyn Arnold had a game-high 14 points. Mifflin County (4-0) plays Dec. 27 at the Harrisburg Freshman Tournament.

Boys basketball

9th grade team: Carlisle 51, Mifflin County 27. Cade Attick had 12 points.

8th grade team: Mifflin County 32, Our Lady of Victory 28. Nelson Cook had 16 points.

7th grade team: Mifflin County 48, Our Lady of Victory 10. Aaron Wagner had 10 points.

Mifflin County hosts Hollidaysburg on today.
