Ruth E. Smeltzer

MECHANICSBURG - Ruth E. Smeltzer, 94, a resident of Messiah Village, in Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Burnham, died at 2:05 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Messiah Village.

Born April 20, 1918, in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Carroll Lincoln Boughter and Catharine (Wagner) Boughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Smeltzer, on June 19, 2011, and her brother, Richard Boughter.

Ruth is survived by: her daughters, Diana R. Smeltzer, of Mechanicsburg, Barbara J. Smeltzer and husband, Mark Miller, of Los Angeles, and Suzanne Adams and husband, Raymond, of New Bloomfield; brother, Carroll Lincoln Boughter Jr. and wife, Lois, of Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a 1935 graduate of Reading High School. She was employed as secretary to the superintendent of Mifflin County School District and worked at the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the Republican Women of Action, Mifflin County Historical Society, the Historical Society of Berks County and the Berks County Genealogical Society.

She was a former member of the Juniata Valley YMCA, in Burnham, and was an avid exerciser, walking with her husband and swimming. Ruth was skilled in counted cross stitch, donating a number of Ecclesiastical banners to her church.

Ruth was a member of the Reedsville Evangelical Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at Reedsville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 E. Logan St., Reedsville, with the Rev. Carla Volland officiating.

Her family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service Monday, at the church.

Memorial donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the Juniata Valley YMCA, 105 First Ave, Burnham, PA 17009, or Messiah Lifeways Endowment Fund, Messiah Village, 100 Mount Allen Rd, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham.
