Harpster re-elected as board president

LEWISTOWN - Walter Harpster will serve another year as president of the Mifflin County School District Board of directors following action taken at the board's annual reorganization meeting Thursday.

Harpster was unanimously elected by an 8-0 margin. Director Dr. Ruth Armstrong was not present at the meeting.

Kirk Rager was elected to serve as vice president after receiving five votes to Annemarie Swineford's three.

Also during the session, the board voted to continue holding committee-of-the-whole meetings on the third Thursday of each month, followed by the regular voting session on the fourth Thursday, with each beginning at 7:30 p.m. The exception to those dates are November and December when the meetings will take place the first and third Thursdays of the month due to holidays.

In other reorganization business, Swineford was re-elected to be the board's liaison to the Pennsylvania School Board Association and the following were elected to serve on the Joint Operating Committee of the Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center: Rager, Parkes, Hurlburt and Harpster. Laughlin was elected alternate.

Following the reorganization, the board held a brief committee-of-the-whole meeting and discussed the following agenda items scheduled to be voted on during the Dec. 20 regular meeting:

Approval of Trudi Gearhart, Mitchell Jodon and Kirk Sheeder as custodial substitutes effective Dec. 10.

Approval of Beth White and Anita Ingram to serve as teacher mentors for the second semester of the current school year.

The addition of Rebecca Swann, Kimberly Clark, Steven McLaughlin and Devin Miller to the substitute teacher list.

Acceptance of the following resignations effective the end of the current school year due to retirement: Robinson Lauver and Timothy Reeder.

Approval of the following coaches for the spring season: Allan Hepner II, assistant track; Gregory Loht, assistant track; Jerold Schnell, junior high softball; and Travis Eckley, assistant junior high softball.

Approval of Francy Becker as a volunteer swim coach for the 2012-13 school year.

A recommendation to adjust the school calendar to reflect a change in the Act 80 half-day on Jan. 18 to a full Act 80 day.

A recommendation to approve three students from Mifflin County High School to attend the National Association of Music Educators Eastern Division Music Festival in Hartford, Conn. on April 4-7 at no cost to the district.
