MIFFLINTOWN - The Juniata County School Board of Directors voted Thursday to replace the well at Walker Elementary School.
Superintendent Richard Musselman said the quality of the water supply at the school fluctuates and is occasionally cloudy or strong smelling. With heavy rain, those instances have been occurring more frequently, he said.
When water quality becomes questionable, Musselman said, the school supplies students with bottled water and switches to a cold lunch with paper plates. The water is not used for cooking or cleaning, he said.
The new well will be located outside the elementary school and will be completed as soon as possible at an estimated cost of $12,000.
Also during the meeting, the school board:
Approved an agreement of affiliation with the Mifflin-Juniata Career and Technology Center's Practical Nursing Program.
Approved the installation of 20 interior video cameras, which the district currently owns, in Juniata High School, Tuscarora Junior High School and East Juniata High School. Four exterior cameras will also be installed at Tuscarora Valley Elementary School at a cost not exceeding $10,000.
Approved financial reports for October 2012 and the list of bills for payment.
Approved membership in the Pennsylvania School District Liquid Asset Fund.
Approved a pupil transportation agreement with Rohrer Bus Service for the 2013-2014 through 2017-2018 school years.
Approved the removal of the Bus 26 route contract. Musselman said notices already have been sent to contractors, and parents will be notified of new bus assignments before the route change goes into effect on Dec. 3.
Established the position of transportation aid for 2.41 hours per day and further approved the employment of Linda Delbaugh in the position, effective today.
Approved the reinstatement of furloughed employees Jenny Strawser, to a Juniata High School Level III paraprofessional position, and Teresa Williams, to a Tuscarora Valley Elementary School Level III paraprofessional position, effective Oct. 19.
Accepted the resignation of Tuscarora Valley Elementary School Level III paraprofessional Wendy Trego, effective Nov. 6.
Approved the employment of Samantha Beward as a Tuscarora Junior High School Level II paraprofessional, effective Nov. 16.
Approved Jasmine Rodriguez as a translator/interpreter.
Approved the reinstatement of furloughed teacher Ashley Hack to provide Title I services to Juniata Mennonite School, effective Oct. 22.
Accepted the resignation of Christie Holderman as supervisor of special education, effective Dec. 1.
