LEWISTOWN - The Juniata County Department of Emergency Services is urging people to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy today, which will bring with it heavy rain, local flash flooding, and high winds with gusts up to 60 mph.
According to the report, this weather is expected to cause many trees to fall, which will most likely cause power outages. Residents living along streams should monitor the water level and take appropriate safety precautions. Keep all drainage pipes and ditches clear of leaves and debris if possible. Citizens are highly encouraged to remain at home and not travel during the storm.
JCDES recommends having the following on hand:
One gallon of drinking water for each person in the household for each day to last at least three days
A telephone that can operate without electricity to the residence
At least a 3 day supply of non-perishable food
Fact Box

Manual can opener for food
Local maps

A 3-day supply of any medications for each person
If there is a need to drive, motorists are always urged to drive according to conditions they encounter. The rainfall may cause roadway flooding, and JCDES warns motorists not to drive across roads covered with water because the water may be deeper than it looks, and never attempt to drive around barriers on any closed roads.
JCDES said people should never call 911 to request road conditions. When calling 911 to report an emergency, it is critical for callers to stay on the line, even if for an extended series of rings, until the operator answers. Hang-ups due to frustration result in wasted staff time as the 911 center tries to reestablish contact. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation highway information is available by dialing 511.
Starting today, the Central Juniata EMS building will be established as a disaster shelter for those in need of emergency shelter.
For non-emergency needs in Juniata County, call 436-7770.
