John ‘Jack’ B. Hostetler

HARRISONBURG, Va. - John "Jack" B. Hostetler, 89, died Oct. 19, 2012, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, in the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

Born Sept. 4, 1923, in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of the late John Amos and Estelle (Benner) Hostetler.

John grew up in the Fontana suburb of Los Angeles, graduating from Fontana High School and attended Fontana Junior College until he left to enter the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was primarily stationed in Panama, where he was trained and worked as a weatherman.

After returning to California, he married Luella "Lou" Marie Kniep on April 21, 1946. She preceded him in death on Aug. 31, 2008. Shortly after marriage the couple moved to Lewistown, following his parents back east, where they had grown up.

Jack worked for Standard Steel Corp., in Lewistown, for more than 35 years in various positions from the bottom, to assistant, to a vice president. He was an avid golfer, often assembling clubs for himself and friends. He also played bridge and enjoyed traveling.

Jack was a lifelong Lutheran, being a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, in Lewistown. He served on church council, was a youth group advisor with his wife and sang in the church choir. Jack and Lou moved to Harrisonburg, Va., in 1993, to be near family, and then joined Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, in Harrisonburg.

Surviving are: one son, William Benner Hostetler, of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Linda Marie Morrison and her husband, Glenn, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and one granddaughter, Amy Louise Morrison, of Harrisonburg, Va.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, at the Goodwill Cemetery, in Bunkertown, with Pastor Erin Bovendam, of Trinity Lutheran Church, in McAlisterville, officiating

Arrangements are shared between Kyger Funeral Home, in Harrisonburg, Va., and Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, in Lewistown.
