Kevin was a 1978 graduate of East Juniata High School. He also graduated from the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Arkansas.

He was employed as an engineer and a supervisor for AMSEC in Norfolk, Va. He was a member of the Baptist church and attended the Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Va. Kevin will be greatly missed for his wit and humor. He was serious about his faith, but was able to laugh at life and make all who came in contact with him laugh as well.

A viewing will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News, Va.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 1021 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Peninsula Lost Cord Club. This is a support group for people who undergo a laryngectomy. Kevin had a laryngectomy in March 2011 and this club helped him and his family through the difficult transition to our "new normal." They remained a source of support and encouragement. Your donation would help provide valuable equipment and supplies as well as other resources to those who have lost their voice to cancer. Send donations to Peninsula Lost Cord Club, in memory of Kevin Benner, 121 Mill Lane, Gafton, VA 23692.
