Police: Fatigue may have factored into Sunday crash

August 14, 2012
From staff reports , Lewistown Sentinel

MILROY - Mifflin County Regional Police Department said fatigue may have been the cause of a crash that occurred Monday night in Milroy.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., police said they responded to U.S. 322, at the Milroy exit, where a 1996 blue Ford F250 was found flipped over with its roof crushed. The driver of the vehicle, David M. Eberly, 18, of Milroy, who was not injured in the crash, stated that he was fatigued and believes he fell asleep while exiting the highway, police said.

After investigation, it was found that Eberly had left the roadway, hit a ditch, and continued traveling toward the eastbound lane, police said. The vehicle then went airborne and down a very steep embankment, flipping over and becoming airborne again, before finally coming to rest on its roof, police said.

Eberly was conscious, police said. The roof of his truck was crushed flush with the top of the truck bed, according to reports.

Police were assisted by Milroy Fire and EMS, Reedsville Fire Co. and Fame EMS. The eastbound lane was closed for approximately 30 minutes until the wreckage and debris were cleared from the roadway, police said.
