Believes Paterno handled scandal as his church did

July 18, 2012
Lewistown Sentinel

To the editor:

As the Freeh report comes we find out what a lot of us already suspected. We find out that Joe Paterno, the man who was a hero and a larger than life figure for many of us, was involved in a cover-up. It is sad from many angles not only from the perspective of the coaching legend's shame but more so from the angle of the victims.

After reviewing it and giving it a lot of thought I have come to the conclusion that will make many people angry and many people uncomfortable. I feel that Joe Paterno who grew up as a Catholic in the Catholic Church handled the scandal just as the Roman Catholic Church handled their very own sexual abuse scandal.

This doesn't give him a free pass or excuse him from any responsibility of his actions but it does give me a window into his state of mind. It shows us that he was human and a person that makes mistakes just like any one of us. It should teach us all a lesson in that we can spend our whole lives doing the right thing but in the end one mistake can take us and many others around us down.
