LEWISTOWN - Sports fans and medical professionals alike have a new, local place to shop.

With the goal to create a store that is both fairly-priced and convenient, Lewistown resident Nathan Keagle has opened Avenue Apparel, a shop that sells medical personnel scrubs, supplies and equipment, as well as baseball, football and collegiate sportswear.

Keagle said the idea for the store, which is located along Electric Avenue in Lewistown, arose because his mother had worked at Lewistown Hospital for 25 years.

"I know a lot of nurses," Keagle said, explaining that many of them had to travel out of town to get scrubs and other work equipment.

Keagle said he hopes that by opening a local shop he can offer low prices and eliminate travel for a lot of customers.

"I just thought it was a no-brainer to open this kind of store in this area," he said.

Avenue Apparel, which opened at the end of April, carries Major League Baseball jerseys, T-shirts, sweatshirts and fleeces, including the Phillies, Pirates, Yankees and Red Sox teams, as well as some college football T-shirts.

Keagle said that National Football League apparel will be ordered through Reebok, and will come later in the summer. Also, the store currently is in negotiations with Nike to order some additional college apparel; it already sells some Penn State gear, he said.

"We'll get some NHL stuff, too," he said, adding that the store also might branch into basketball apparel.

And for those in the medical field, the store also carries a variety of name brand scrubs.

"These are high quality," Keagle said. "That's what we wanted to do."

Emergency Medical Technician equipment also is offered, as well as name brand stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, scissors, socks, shoes, lab coats and accessories, he said.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. It is located on 701 Electric Ave., suite B, next to Pop's Deli. For more information call 953-9260.
