National Night Out set for August

LEWISTOWN - Local law enforcement agencies are inviting area residents to participate in the annual National Night Out event scheduled for Aug. 2-3 in Mifflin County, according to a press release.
The event is slated to begin Aug. 2 with the Second Annual Splash Hop, and conclude Aug. 3 with the local observance.
The Splash Hop will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Burnham Community Pool. The event, sponsored by the Touring Friends Motorcycle Club, will provide opportunities to compete in a splash contest and diving board, free style competition. Prizes will include sweatshirts, sports packs and caps. Entry to the event is free and there will be complimentary hot dogs, sodas and chips available for youth age 18 or younger, the release states.
The local observance of National Night Out will be held at Derry Township Community Park and sponsored by the Mifflin County Regional Police Department, Mifflin County Communities That Care and Community Watch organizers throughout the county. Derry Township Supervisor Ron Napikoski will kick off the event at 6 p.m., with local band Three Months Off set to play from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., followed by a flashlight walk around the track.
The night will conclude at 9 p.m. with the presentation of the film, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," sponsored by Wilson's Gifts and Jewelry and presented by GMan Entertainment. This year's event will be the eighth local observance of National Night Out, and the 27th year of activities throughout the country.
There will be a number of special activities throughout the evening, including a motorcycle and car display, climbing wall and fly-in by LifeFlight. Child DNA and ID kits will be provided by various community organizations. Refreshments also will be available for purchase, according to the release.
The National Night Out observance was created to foster safe neighborhoods, promote positive relationships between the community and law enforcement, and enhance living conditions of the local neighborhoods and communities.
The Mifflin County Regional Police Department and Mifflin County Communities That Care ask area residents to turn on their porch lights during the event. Donations to help fund this year's and future National Night Out events will be accepted.
