LEWISTOWN - How is it that a rain forest can travel thousands of miles and relocate to a rural town - such as Lewistown? It truly is something you will have to see to believe.
Highland Park Elementary will be transformed into a tropical rain forest on Jan. 8, as founder and current director Mike Kohlrieser and his company, Understanding Wildlife, will present the animal comedy show, "Live on Stage, The Rain Forest," to area residents.
"Not only will you think you are right in the middle of the tropical rain forest with the beautiful sounds and sights of the Amazon region, you will also see exotic birds, alligators, jungle cats, monkeys and snakes," a press release from Understanding Wildlife states.
The idea for Understanding Wildlife all started back in the 1980s, when Kohlrieser and his wife, Marcia, became increasingly aware of problems in the tropical rain forests.
"Using his already developed skills as an animal trainer and stage entertainer, Kohlrieser wanted to educate young and old alike about these animals facing possible extinction," the release states.
In 1992, the non-profit organization Understanding Wildlife Inc. was created. It's goal: To educate and inspire individuals to get involved and make the planet "a better world for us all (including animals) to live in."
"If man would leave nature alone, it would be fine. Unfortunately, we don't do that. It's up to us to right our wrongs," Kohlrieser said.
Area residents will have two opportunities to check out the animal exhibition. The show will be performed at 5 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at Highland Park Elementary. The cost is $5 per person and tickets will be available at the door.
