BURNHAM - A gas line ruptured around noon Tuesday along Logan Boulevard in Burnham, partially closing the road to traffic and causing several businesses to temporarily evacuate customers and employees, officials report.

A private contractor doing plumbing work in the area of J.P. Edward's Restaurant and Pizza Hut along Logan Boulevard struck a gas line going into the two businesses. Officials evacuated both businesses as a precaution. Several other businesses also temporarily closed as a safety precaution and because customers were not able to utilize the businesses while crews worked at the scene of the gas leak, officials said.

Representatives of UGI gas company were at the scene shortly after the initial emergency management crews were dispatched and were able to shut off the leaking gas line. The road was partially closed to traffic from the intersection of Logan Boulevard and Freedom Avenue to Dunkin Donuts for about an hour.

UGI representatives evaluated the buildings of the two businesses most affected by the gas leak and determined they were able to reopen on Tuesday.

Burnham, Yeagertown, Highland Park, Reedsville and East Derry fire companies along with Fame EMS and fire police responded to the scene.
