STATE COLLEGE - A winter storm watch is in effect for much of the Juniata Valley from this evening into Wednesday morning, according to a report from the National Weather Service in State College.
The National Weather Service issued the watch report Monday, which states there could be "significant snow and ice accumulation" across Mifflin, Juniata and Huntingdon counties beginning this evening.
Low pressure over the southern plains states today is expected to move northeast through the great lakes on Wednesday. With strong southwest winds, deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to mix with the cold airmass already across central Pennsylvania. Snow is expected to develop from the southwest late in the day today. Snow fall could be heavy at times early tonight before a layer of above freezing air pushes north across the region, which could cause a change from snow to sleet and then freezing rain.
Several inches of snow is possible, followed by a potentially significant ice accumulation in excess of one quarter of an inch of freezing rain. The wintry mix is expected to diminish to drizzle or freezing drizzle later on Wednesday morning.
Other counties included in the winter storm watch are: Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron, Clinton, Clearfield, Centre, Cambria, Blair, Somerset, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, Perry, Cumberland and Adams.
