LEWISTOWN - The Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star team that won the Babe Ruth state title this past summer was honored with a banquet Monday night at the Lewistown Moose Family Center.

Each member of the team was given citations from members of the state Legislature and also a state championship jacket.

The citations came from state Sen. Jake Corman (R-Bellefonte) and state Reps. C. Adam Harris (R-Mifflintown), Kerry A. Benninghoff (R-Bellefonte), Russell Fairchild (R-Winfield) and Mike Fleck (R-Huntingdon).

As the state legislature was in session, none of the government officials was able to attend the banquet in person.

Mifflin County not only won the state title, but also finished second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, played in Saugerties, N.Y. It marked only the sixth time that a Mifflin County team made the regional final. Mifflin County has fielded 107 all-star teams over the past 55 years.

"The banquet was to honor what the players achieved this summer," manager Butch Bender said. "People don't realize how tough it is to make the regional finals in the Mid-Atlantic. Our coaching staff got to work with these players for two years and it was not only fun, but an honor, too."

Members of the team included Travis Fisher, Brenden Fultz, Alex Hughes, Tanner Kibe, Jeremy Koller, Levi North, Josh Rosefsky, Tyson Searer, Brady Specht, Hunter Walker, Cole Welham, Mitch Welham, Chris Wilson, Ted Wilson and Tyler Wilson.

The coaching staff included Bender, coaches Fred Zook and Mike Milliken, and scorekeeper Aaron Hughes.

During the summer, the team won 14 straight games, setting a new league record. The team also set a new fielding record with a .955 average.

In three years, the Class of 2009 won two state titles and won more games than any other class in the history of the league with a 33-5 record.
