LEWISTOWN - There will be only one week of postseason Babe Ruth baseball next summer at Armagh Memorial Field.
Ron Zimmerman, the president of Pennsylvania Babe Ruth baseball, announced the schedule for the dates and places for the 2010 season.
The District 7 14- and 15-year-old tournaments will be held at Milroy. The 15-year-olds will open play on July 2 and the 14-year-olds on July 3. This will mark the first time that the 15-year-olds will play a district tournament at home after being on the road in Gettysburg as 13- and 14-year-olds.
On July 10, the 13-year-old District 7 tournament will open in Gettysburg.
The state tournaments will begin July 21 or July 22. The 15-year-old tournament will be hosted by Middletown Township and will be held in Langhorne (Bucks County). Middletown has been in the final four the past two years.
As 13-year-olds (2007), Mifflin County was state runner up and finished in a tie for third as 14-year-olds last summer.
The 14-year-old state tournament will be hosted by West End of Williamsport. Last summer, West End won the state title and also won the Mid-Atlantic Regional and finished in the final six at the World Series.
The 13-year-old tournament will be held in North Pocono (Monroe County) and will be hosted by the Blue Valley Babe Ruth League.
LEWISTOWN - The Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-year-old All-Star team that won the Babe Ruth state title this past summer was honored with a banquet Monday night at the Lewistown Moose Family Center.
Each member of the team was given citations from members of the state Legislature and also a state championship jacket.
The citations came from state Sen. Jake Corman (R-Bellefonte) and state Reps. C. Adam Harris (R-Mifflintown), Kerry A. Benninghoff (R-Bellefonte), Russell Fairchild (R-Winfield) and Mike Fleck (R-Huntingdon).
As the state legislature was in session, none of the government officials was able to attend the banquet in person.
Mifflin County not only won the state title, but also finished second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, played in Saugerties, N.Y. It marked only the sixth time that a Mifflin County team made the regional final. Mifflin County has fielded 107 all-star teams over the past 55 years.
"The banquet was to honor what the players achieved this summer," manager Butch Bender said. "People don't realize how tough it is to make the regional finals in the Mid-Atlantic. Our coaching staff got to work with these players for two years and it was not only fun, but an honor, too."
Members of the team included Travis Fisher, Brenden Fultz, Alex Hughes, Tanner Kibe, Jeremy Koller, Levi North, Josh Rosefsky, Tyson Searer, Brady Specht, Hunter Walker, Cole Welham, Mitch Welham, Chris Wilson, Ted Wilson and Tyler Wilson.
The coaching staff included Bender, coaches Fred Zook and Mike Milliken, and scorekeeper Aaron Hughes.
During the summer, the team won 14 straight games, setting a new league record. The team also set a new fielding record with a .955 average.
In three years, the Class of 2009 won two state titles and won more games than any other class in the history of the league with a 33-5 record.
