LEWISTOWN - The Mifflin County Commissioners were all smiles on Thursday as they commended two community-based organizations for their positive impact on people's lives.
Commissioners said the local United Way, headed by Marie Mulvihill, and Communities that Care, with Nancy Records at the helm, were two vital organizations in Mifflin County.
Commissioners signed a proclamation during the regular board meeting on Thursday that declares November as United Way month.
"Your organization stands tall in assisting people in these tough times," Commissioner Otis Riden said.
Mulvihill thanked the commissioners for their support of the United Way.
Also on the agenda for Thursday's meeting was a Purchase of Service Agreement for use by Children and Youth Services to fund Communities that Care through September 2010 using grant money.
Records said she was extremely appreciative of the support she has received from the commissioners.
The grant funding helps pay Record's salary as well as promote CTC's "Drug Free Community" program.
"We have finished our youth survey and we are hoping to get out early," Records said.
Records said the survey assesses the perception and attitude young people have about alcohol and drugs. The results of the survey then are used to develop better ways to help young people avoid drugs and alcohol.
"I truly appreciate your support," Records said to the commissioners.
Other items on the agenda include the following:
Mifflin County is soliciting letters of interest and statements of qualifications from consulting engineers licensed in Pennsylvania and designated as PennDOT ECMS Business Partners to act as a county bridge and roadway engineer. The scope of services will include, but are not limited to design activities relating to local bridge and roadway projects and NBIS bridge inspection and inventory. The county encourages responses from small firms, minority firms, and firms who have not previously performed work for Mifflin County.
Commissioners approved a sub-recipient agreement between Mifflin County and Snyder Union Mifflin Child Development for financial assistance under the county's 2009 Community Development Block Grant program.
Commissioners approved a purchase of service agreement for use, if needed, by Children and Youth Services and the Probation department with VisionQuest National Ltd., Inc., of Downingtown.
A resolution was passed designating Mifflin County Industrial Development Corporation as the agency to receive Local Economic Development Assistance funds for 2009-2010.
The Mifflin County Planning and Development Department is advising all municipalities within Mifflin County (except the CDBG entitlement communities of Derry Township, Granville Township and Lewistown Borough) that the Mifflin County Commissioners are hereby requesting proposals for community development projects to be funded under the 2010 CDBG program. Proposals must be submitted to the planning department by 4 p.m. on Dec. 21. Applications can be downloaded from the planning department Web site at www.co.mifflin.pa.us. Questions about what projects will qualify should be directed to Jan R. McDonald at 242-0887.
