THOMPSONTOWN - A Thompsontown woman is charged with stealing more than $25,000 from the Thompsontown Volunteer Fire Department during a period of two years, Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown report.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled today for Carol Leanne Weyrich, 54, of RR1, Thompsontown, who is charged with stealing $21,500 from the Thompsontown Volunteer Fire Department from Feb. 16, 2008, to Dec. 31, 2008, and $2,909.15 from Feb. 1, 2009, to March 19, 2009, according to court documents.

Weyrich served as the treasurer of the fire department from April 2007 until June 2009. Court documents indicate the thefts were discovered by the assistant treasurer, Connie Marie Eaton, who confronted Weyrich who in turn said she took the money to pay her family's bills.

When questioned by police about the thefts, Weyrich admitted to stealing the money, and indicated she had informed members of the fire company and was beginning to pay back the money she took, according to court documents. Weyrich paid to the department $300 in cash and a check for $3,900, documents indicate.

Weyrich said she would write checks and then cash them at a bank in Thompsontown or have the checks deposited directly into her own bank account, according to court documents.

Weyrich is charged with two counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition.
