Koller cards 82, qualifies for district golf tourneyFrom staff reports
ALTOONA - Indian Valley's Jeremy Koller shot an 82 Tuesday, the only local golfer to escape from the Eastern sectional qualifying tournament for District 6 at Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona.
The top 20 players, including ties, advanced to the district tournament. That meant to move on, a round of 88 or better was needed.
Indian Valley's other golfers were Nolan Schaaf, Tyler Gentzel and John Bridgens.
"They had a good day," said Glenn Kyle who was filling in for Indian Valley coach Kevin O'Donnell. "Koller may have shot his low round of the year."
The top Lewistown golfer was David Boozel, who carded a 98. Evan Pupo and Lance Heckman also competed for the Panthers.
"The pins were in extremely difficult positions," Panthers coach Aaron Bubb said. "There were no flat putts anywhere on the greens and the wind was blowing a bit, making it tougher."
Both teams are back in action today at the Mountain League championship at Iron Masters Country Club in Roaring Spring.
Field hockey
Greenwood 4, Lewistown 0
MILLERSTOWN - Greenwood put up 56 shots on goal and Autumn Pellman managed another hat trick as Greenwood handed Lewistown a 4-0 loss in Tri-Valley League field hockey Tuesday.
"We would have liked to have found the net a couple more times," quipped Greenwood coach Kent Houser, comparing the relatively low score when the shot total is taken into account. He attributed that to Lewistown keeper Ashley Wagner, who stopped 30 balls, and the backfield.
"Their defense did a tremendous job," he said.
Greenwood (14-1, 11-0) hosts Indian Valley Thursday. Lewistown is at Juniata the same day.
Newport 5, Juniata 1
NEWPORT - Kelsey Long got a goal for Juniata Tuesday, but it was after five Newport tallies in a 5-1 Tri-Valley League field hockey loss for the Indians.
"I'm very impressed with Kelsey," said Juniata coach Megan Eargle, who moved her to the inside to cover for an injury.
Brittany Miller had a pair of goals to lead the Buffaloes. Eargle said she was happy with the play of her backfield against a strong offense.
"The score may not always reflect how well they play. They don't give up," she said.
Newport also won the JV game, 5-0.
Juniata (0-12, 0-11) will host Lewistown Thursday.
Boys soccer
Bald Eagle Area 3, Indian Valley 0
WINGATE - Bald Eagle Area's Danny Styles had all three goals as Indian Valley fell 3-0 in a Mountain League boys soccer game Tuesday.
"We go out and score six goals (Monday) night and we worked the ball around nice and we come out here tonight and do the complete opposite," Indian Valley coach Kyle Cramer said. "We were very inconsistent as far as what we're going to do. It's just frustrating at times."
Ross Wagner made nine saves in the loss for the Warriors.
"We could do it, we did it (Monday) night," Cramer said. "We're frustrated here and I'm sure the kids are frustrated. I just don't know whats going on here."
Indian Valley won the JV contest, 3-0.
The Warriors (4-8, 4-7) host Penns Valley Thursday.
Northumberland Christian 3, Belleville Mennonite 0
NORTHUMBERLAND - Nate Metzler made seven saves - including one on a penalty kick in the second quarter - but Belleville Mennonite still fell at Northumberland Christian, 3-0, Tuesday in non-league boys soccer contest.
"Nate had a decent game," Trojans coach Brian Yoder said. "He didn't have to come up with the real big saves like (Monday) night. But the save on the PK was huge and I thought that would give us momentum coming forward, but it didn't."
Belleville Mennonite (0-9) will travel to East Juniata Friday - the night of the Tigers' homecoming festivities.
Girls soccer
Indian Valley 3, Bald Eagle Area 0
HIGHLAND PARK - Dani Treaster scored a pair of goals for Indian Valley as the Warriors blanked Bald Eagle Area 3-0 in a Mountain League girls soccer contest Tuesday.
"She had a great game finishing," Indian Valley coach Anita Valerio said. "She and Jess Lamberson worked great together out front."
Lamberson had the assist on the second goal for both Indian Valley and Treaster in a game that Valerio called "vengance."
"We had a little vengance set out," she said. "The last time we played, they beat us 2-1 and we outshot them 30-6. The girls were pretty sure they needed to get the ball in the net. They learned their lesson and they came out ready to score today."
Indian Valley (7-5-1, 6-4-1) is in good position to make it to districts, but Valerio says there is still a way to go before the playoffs.
"As of right now, we're sitting in a decent playoff position," the coach said. "Do we see ourselves in postseason? Yes. Do we have things to get better at? Yes."
The Warriors and Eagles played to a 2-2 tie in the JV game.
Indian Valley will travel to Penns Valley on Saturday.
Central Mountain 5, Lewistown 0
LEWISTOWN - Lewistown coach John Stiver was pleased with his team's effort against Central Mountain despite a 5-0 Mountain League girls soccer loss Tuesday.
"I was pleased with how the girls responded after a tough loss (Monday) night," Stiver said.
Stiver said the first goal was about as quirky as he's ever seen as coach.
"That was one of the weirdest goals I've ever seen," he said. "It was in (Lewistown goalie Emma Hepler's) hand and it kind of slipped out or something and went in. She really felt bad about that."
The second half was a bit better for the Panthers as the Wildcats were held to just a single goal. Stiver also took the opportunity to get his younger players some varsity experience.
"We jumbled our starting lineup a bit as far as positions to shore up midfield," he said. "We moved Mara Sunderland and Lauren Snyder to midfield. ... I was pleased with all girls that had playing time. They stepped up and played well."
Lewistown (4-5-1, 4-5-1) will travel to Tyrone Thursday.
Juniata Mennonite 3, New Covenant Academy 1
MANSFIELD -Taylor Marker scored twice and Jenny Zimmerman added another goal to lead the Juniata Mennonite girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory over New Covenant Mansfield on Tuesday afternoon.
The hosts recorded the first tally in the opening quarter, but the Lions bounced back with the equalizer in the second and two more in the fourth to secure the win.
"We've been playing well and have doing better at getting shots on goal," Juniata Mennonite coach Trish Hoffman said. "We really stepped up and played well today. Last time we played (New Covenant) we tied them 0-0 so we really wanted to play well and get some goals today."
The Lions (6-4-2) travel to Grace Prep on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Montoursville 3, Midd-West 2 (2OT)
MIDDLEBURG - Midd-West's girls soccer team started Tuesday's game just as it wanted. However, Montoursville finished the contest in an even more impressive fashion.
The Mustangs scored the first two goals of the game, but Montoursville tallied the final three en route to a 3-2 Heartland Conference triumph in double overtime.
Cheyenne Spade and Brittney Kuhns connected for the Mustangs while Abby Gesselman stopped seven shots in goal.
Midd-West (8-2-1, 7-2-1) travels to Selinsgrove on Thursday.
Volleyball
Bellefonte 3, Lewistown 0
LEWISTOWN - Bellefonte flat out frustrated Lewistown in Mountain League girls volleyball Tuesday, ekeing out a 3-0 win with only one strong game.
"We had a chance to win this one and we didn't get it done," Lewistown coach Jim Fosselman said. "At the right time, we just didn't close."
The Panthers dropped the first game 25-14, but had a 21-20 lead late in the second - until Bellefonte turned it around, winning the next five points. It was even closer, at 23-23, in the third before the Red Raiders closed it out.
"They're a big team and they're a good team," said Fosselman, who pointed out that the Panthers went 80 percent serving, including a 9-for-9 performance by Caryssa Ammerman. "You just can't ask much more than that."
The JV team lost 2-1. Lewistown travels to Huntingdon Thursday.
Philipsburg-Osceola 3, Indian Valley 0
HIGHLAND PARK - Philipsburg-Osceola made another brief visit to Mifflin County for volleyball Tuesday, dominating play while winning in three quick sets against Indian Valley, 25-9, 25-9 and 25-4.
"The girls failed to execute even the basics tonight. They made numerous errors that literally gave Philipsburg points that they didn't have to earn," Warriors coach Margy Zook said. "We need to regroup for the next part of our season."
Indian Valley travels to Central Mountain on Thursday.
Mount Union 3, Moshannon Valley 2
MOUNT UNION - Mount Union - a team that struggled to serve against Southern Fulton on Monday - rode stellar serving to a 3-2 Inter-County Conference volleyball win over visiting Moshannon Valley Monday.
The Trojans won with game scores of 23-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-22, 15-6 on the backs of multiple aces from just about everyone who set foot on the floor for Mount Union.
"We only had six missed serves in five games," Mount Union coach Tessa McCormick said. "I think being at home we were confident and were able to keep serves in."
The Trojans had to rebound from dropping behind twice in the match. The Damsels edged Mount Union in the first set, 25-23, before the Trojans returned the favor in the second, winning 26-24.
Moshannon Valley won comfortably in the third set 25-15 before Mount Union took the last two - by 25-22 and 15-6 scores, respectively.
"This was our first win in a five-setter," McCormick said. "We haven't come out with any wins in five-setters. At one time, we were down 15-6 and came back in the third to make it competitive, but we decided it was time we finally win one of these."
The Trojans won the JV game 2-1 with game scores of 25-20, 21-25 and 15-10.
Mount Union (7-4, 4-3) hosts Glendale on Thursday.
Cross country
BOYS: Southern Fulton 19, Mount Union 38
GIRLS: Mount Union 15, Southern Fulton 50
WARFORDSBURG - Katrina Woods was the fastest Mount Union runner Tuesday - all genders included - as the Trojans earned a 15-50 girls win and suffered a 19-38 boys loss at Southern Fulton.
Woods' blistering time of 20:28 was plenty good for first in the girls race and was a full 50 seconds faster than the first male Trojan runner to finish - Dan McKeehan's ninth-place time of 21:18.
"Katrina adapts very well to new courses," Mount Union coach Bob Wydock said. "She's always consistent and always looks strong."
The top four Trojan boys all finished within 30 seconds of one another, something that was a strategy play by Mount Union.
"My top four boys ran well together," Wydock said. "They ran very nice in a pack. We just ran into a tough Southern Fulton team today."
Mount Union (6-2 boys, 3-5 girls) will host Juniata Valley on Oct. 13.
Lewistown at Central Mountain
MILL HALL - Most of Lewistown's runners had personal-best performances in a tri-meet at Central Mountain Thursday.
"On a near-perfect running day, a finally healthy Abram Nace showed his state-qualifying self again," Lewistown coach Scott Falker said.
Nace finished second overall with a time of 17:15. Dan Mort crossed the line fifth at 19:09, while Jacob Kramm knocked a minute and a half off his previous best, recording a 22:19.
On the girls side, Samantha Hendricks returned to the lineup with a personal-best time of 28:26.
Mountain League meet at Indian Valley
REEDSVILLE - Indian Valley's cross country teams flexed their collective muscles Tuesday, sweeping Central, Tyrone, Huntingdon and Williamsburg in both boys and girls cross country five-team meets at the Indian Valley Middle School course in Reedsville.
Brooke King won the girls race in a time of 21:53 and led a contingent of three Warrior girls to the top three spots. Kelley Lepley was second and Kate Korona was third. Marissa Long wasn't far behind as she came home fifth. Erin Harklerode's eighth-place finish put her as the final scoring harrier for the Warrior girls.
"Our top four ran well," Indian Valley coach Ron Sprecher said. "We are looking forward to some break time."
Alex Monroe again paced the boys race, finishing in first with a time of 16:43, almost 1 1/2 minutes faster than second-place runner and fellow Warrior Mark Yoder. Cameron Foultz and Trevor Guyer also took top-five spots and the last Indian Valley runner to score was Calvin Shank in sixth.
"The boys looked good coming off a hard meet on Saturday," Sprecher said.
Indian Valley (6-1 boys, 6-1 girls) will race with Penns Valley at rival Lewistown on Oct. 13.
