MILTON - With a 6-2 decision at 152 pounds, Midd-West's Ty Knepp picked up his 100th career victory as the Mustangs (9-9) evened their dual meet record by beating Milton 45-22 in a Heartland Conference match Thursday.

"He (Knepp) just kind of did what he always does," Midd-West coach Clint Swartz explained. "I think it's a big goal for him. It's one of those milestones in a career that you really like to see."

Knepp, the son of longtime Middleburg coach Dan Knepp, is the third wrestler since the Midd-West merger to reach the mark, but the first to accumulate all of his wins in a Mustang singlet. And the returning state place winner did it despite missing much of last season due to an injury suffered in soccer season.

"It's one of those accomplishments that really sets you above most of the competition and really speaks about your dedication to the sport of wrestling," Swartz said, adding that Knepp continued to wrestle in a quiet, businesslike manor even knowing that he was about to win No. 100.

Christian Klinger picked up a major decision to start off the match at 125 before Nick Kratzer pinned Tyler Neuhard at 135. Other Mustang victories were recorded by Tyler Herb, Aaron Shrawder and Chad Heintzelman. Caleb Gilbert and Chris Baker received forfeits.

"Altogether, I thought it was one of the better matches we wrestled," Swartz said. "I'm kind of hoping it's a little bit of a turnaround here. We've wrestled some pretty close matches here lately."

Midd-West is back in action at Jersey Shore on Thursday.

Wrestling

Mount Union 50, Northern Bedford 29

MOUNT UNION - Northern Bedford fired out of the gates in Thursday's Inter-County Conference meet with Mount Union by winning the first four bouts of the night- three of which were falls and the other a technical fall.

But unfortunately for the visitors, their time of celebration was about to come to a quick halt.

With the exception of a forfeit in the next to last bout, Mount Union was convincing in winning each match the remainder of the evening. Zach Hicks, Malakia Jackson, Willie Grove, Ryan Wilson, Mike Younce and Donnie Rosensteel all recorded falls for the Trojans. Jamel Fortson and Dalton Smith picked up major decisions and Dylan Knable won by forfeit.

"I thought we stepped up tonight and beat a pretty decent team," Mount Union coach Corey Wertz said. "We had a couple different guys step up and we need to keep that momentum - we have some big matches coming up soon."

The Trojans (10-1) travel to Moshannon Valley on Saturday.

Boys basketball

Millersburg 69, East Juniata 57

MILLERSBURG - East Juniata traveled across the Susquehanna River on Thursday evening in search of the its first road victory of the season. Three quarters into the game, the Tigers could taste it. But unfortunately for the visitors, the homestanding Millersburg Indians outscored East Juniata 19-9 in the final frame to take a 69-57 Tri-Valley League victory.

"We played even for three quarters and actually had a six point lead in the second quarter," East Juniata coach Brock Anders said. "We had some turnovers in the fourth quarter, which actually opened the game up. But Deen Williams made five out of six free throws to seal the game for them."

Tyler Dressler and Tyler Erhard dominate in the post, recording 31 points between the two. But Zach Maiden scored 22 for Millersburg to power his team to victory.

"I actually believe their best player was Ian Klinger and we held him to seven points," Anders explained. "I was very pleased with our effort overall and we're hoping that this is a good carryover into those two non-conference games next week. To go to (Millersburg's) place and give them all they could handle - I think that is a good stepping stone."

The Tigers also dropped the JV contest, 70-62.

East Juniata (1-11, 0-7) hosts Fannett-Metal on Monday evening.

Greenwood 75, Line Mountain 40

MILLERSTOWN - Ethan Pellman had a game-high 26 points to lead the Greenwood Wildcats to a 75-40 Tri-Valley League victory on Thursday evening.

"We were a little slow starting out and then we started to warm up a little bit," Wildcats coach Kent House explained. "We started to hit some threes and that started opening up some holes in their zone for us."

Andrew Rhoads chipped in with 19 points and Jordann Ferguson added 13 in the victory as Greenwood used a 25-point third-quarter effort to break the game open.

"We kind of let things get away from us in the second period," Houser said. "But we had a talk about that at halftime and we buckled down and got things back together after that."

Greenwood also took the JV contest, 49-34.

The Wildcats (11-1, 7-0) take a step out of conference play to host Selinsgrove on Saturday.

Girls basketball

Moshannon Valley 52, Mount Union 32

HOUTZDALE - Fouls were the story Thursday in Mount Union's 52-32 girls basketball loss to Moshannon Valley.

The Trojans (1-11) had two players foul out and a number of others finish the game with four fouls.

Couple that with the 14-0 free throw discrepancy in the second half and Mount Union coach Mike Mittermeier believes it's next to impossible to win.

"We were playing too aggressively," he said. "It's what young kids do. You have to adjust to how the refs are calling the game. They did and we didn't."

Mount Union was led in the scoring column with nine.

"We couldn't make a shot," Mittermeier said. "I don't know if their big student section had anything to do with it. I think it did. They haven't played in front of one like that before. But we don't make excuses."

Mount Union will begin a three-game homestand Monday against Claysburg-Kimmel.
