James R. Dunkelberger

YORK - James R. Dunkelberger, 73, died unexpectedly Oct. 1, 2008, on a beach in Kauai, Hi., after snorkeling with his wife during a cruise vacation.

Born Nov. 10, 1934, in Hegins, he was a son of the late Ray and Romie (Laudenslager) Dunkelberger.

He was the loving husband of Mariann "Miki" (Linard) Dunkelberger, to whom he was married to for 16 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Dunkelberger is survived by: son, Gregory and wife, Laurie Dunkelberger, of New Freedom; a daughter, Kim Hamilton, of Fl.; two step-sons, Dayne and wife, Sharon Riddle, of Red Lion and Brian and wife, Janice Riddle, of York; a step-daughter, Bobbi Jo and husband, Michael Donnelly, of Va.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a sister Alice Behre, of Solomons, Md. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and his faithful Rottweiler, Bach.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace (Bush) Dunkelberger and a grandson, Dayne S. Riddle.

He was a retired design engineer who worked on a contract base for numerous defense contractors.

Mr. Dunkelberger was a past assistant scoutmaster for Cub Scouts and chapter advisor for DeMolay.

He was a member of the White Rose Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge, 706 and numerous affiliated Masonic organizations and also was a member at Loyal Order of Moose.

He served as a past president and very active member of Sertoma Club of York, devoted member of Hayshire United Church of Christ and a member of NRA.

Jim brought many family members to the area to enjoy time at his cabin on Jack's Mountain.

A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Heffner Funeral Capel, 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, with his pastor, the Rev. Phyllis J. Baum, officiating.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the funeral home. Following the service, friends and family will be gathering in the Terrace Room at Wisehaven Social Hall.
