MIFFLINTOWN — Two families are left homeless following a fire Wednesday evening in Mifflintown.

The fire, reported at about 4:30 p.m., destroyed two mobile homes at Horning’s Trailer Park, off of old U.S. 322, outside of Mifflintown.

Mifflintown Hose Co. Chief Shane Zimmerman said the fire began in the mobile home on lot No. 4, and was “fully involved” when his company arrived and began battling the blaze.

As the companies fought the fire, the mobile home on lot No. 3, directly adjacent to No. 4, also caught fire due to the amount of heat being radiated from the first mobile home.

The firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the two homes and were able to save a third home, which sustained minor damage.

“We checked it out,” Zimmerman said. “It received very little heat damage.”

Both of the destroyed mobile homes were occupied but no one was inside of them when the fire began, Zimmerman said.

Although no one was injured in the blaze, there were several animals killed in the fire, he said.

Both families are left homeless following the blaze, and they are being taken care of by the American Red Cross.

Zimmerman said the outside heat Wednesday “took a toil” on the men battling the fire.

“Really, the only difficulty we had was the temperature outside, heatwise,” he said.

In total, the firefighters were on scene for roughly three hours.

Responding to the fire were the Mifflintown Hose Co., Port Royal Fire Co., Friendship Fire Co., Fayette Township Fire Co., Beale Township Fire Co., Central Juniata EMS, Junction Fire Co. and the Highland Park Hose Co.
