Donald R. O’Shell, Sr.

YORK — Donald R. O’Shell, Sr., 78, of Springettsbury Township, died at 5 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008, at the York Hospital. He was the husband of Martha L. (Fisher) O’Shell.

Born May 31, 1929, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Curtis and Martha Belle (McCormick) O’Shell.

Don was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1976 graduate of Appalachian Bible Institute. He retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1972 with 20 years of service. He was a Pennsylvania Army and Air National Guard veteran having served for 12 years to include the Korean Conflict while mobilized to Germany.

Don was an ordained minister and served as a pastor at various churches in Pennsylvania and West Virginia to include Calvary Bible Church and Eastside Baptist (now Bible) Church both in Lower Windsor Township and interim pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Seven Valleys. Don concluded his ministry as a police chaplain with the York City Police Department. Don also worked in security at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in Peach Bottom Township.

Rev. O’Shell was a member of Grace Fellowship Church where he previously led a seniors’ ministry. Earlier in his life he led youth ministries in the Lewistown area with Teenage Christians and Youth For Christ.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Don Jr. and his wife, LeeAnn O’Shell, of York, and David Sr. and his wife, Nicole O’Shell, of York; four grandchildren, David Jr., Kali, Julia and Lucille; and a brother, Harold O’Shell of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and mother-in-law, Kathryn Fisher, of Reedsville. His brother, Dr. Curtis O’Shell, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Fellowship Church, 1405 Seven Valleys Road, York, with his Pastor Larry R. Katz officiating. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, with graveside military rites by the Pennsylvania Military Funeral Honor Guard. A viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York and at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
