GRANVILLE — Area residents came out to show their support for the 2008 Republican candidates Saturday afternoon during the annual Mifflin County Republican summer picnic held at Malta Park. “We are having a picnic to basically hammer home how important (voter) registration is this November,” said Nick Soccio, Mifflin County state committee member and chairman of the county’s Young Republican’s Executive Committee. Soccio said the group also hopes to convince younger voters and non-Republicans who currently are undecided to vote the Republican ticket in November. Chet Beiler, the Republican candidate for state auditor general, was the keynote speaker for Saturday’s event. Beiler said he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with local supporters and area residents. “I want to see the government become more transparent and accountable ... we need a change,” Beiler said. Beiler said he was born and raised in Lancaster County as the third of eight children.
