Pitching lifts Crosscutters over Spikes
WILLIAMSPORT — Williamsport’s pitching was able to hold the State College Spikes to a season-low two hits as the Crosscutters took the final SawBuck Series matchup of the season, 4-1, at Historic Bowman Field Friday. Both State College (37-37) hits were leadoff doubles, as David Rubinstein and Justin Byler delivered two-base hits in the second and fourth innings, respectively. However, neither Spike made it past third base as Williamsport (40-34) was able to retire 12 straight State College batters from the fourth to seventh innings. The Spikes took advantage of a pair of errors in the eighth inning to get on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout by Brock Holt, but could not put together a ninth-inning rally. Nick Hernandez (8-1) started and earned the win for Williamsport to pull into a tie for second in the league in victories with State College’s Tyler Cox, Lowell’s Jose Alvarez, and Brooklyn’s Collin McHugh.
