Ladies: How old is that eyeshadow? It's time to clean out your makeup stash

April 23, 2009 - Bethany Fehlinger and Marjorie Stromberg
We all know it's time for spring cleaning. This usually involves an apartment or house, when you pull back the curtains, clean off the blinds and open the windows. For women, we usually go through our drawers and closet to make room for our new purchases and put the summer choices out prominently.
But what about makeup?
I'm the type of gal that uses it until it gets yucky or it's gone. I just hate to waste.
I have realized, though, that it could be bad for my skin to hang onto that eyeshadow from 2000. (Did I just admit that?)
Well, ladies, the time has come for us to stop hoarding and throw out our makeup!
I know, it's so hard to give up that glitter from 1998 that you use whenever you're out tearing up the dance floor with the girls, but just go out and buy a new one!
The two key rules are this: If it smells gross, throw it out; and if you can't remember when you bought it (not specific months, but years), get rid of it!
There are some basic guidelines to follow with your makeup. Throw these out after you've had them for the allotted time:
≤ Oil-free foundation: one year
≤ Cream or compact foundation: 18 months
≤ Concealer: 12-18 months
≤ Powder: two years
≤ Blush and bronzer: two years
≤ Cream blush: 12-18 months
≤ Powder eye shadow: two years
≤ Cream eye shadow: 12-18 months
≤ Eyeliner: two years
≤ Liquid eyeliner: three-six months
≤ Mascara: three months
≤ Lipstick: two years
≤ Lip liner: two years
≤ Lip gloss: 18-24 months
≤ Nail color: one year
You also can write the date you bought the item on the product with a Sharpie, using your choice of color!
So remember, if you're trying to clean out your apartment and wardrobe to let the air flow more freely in your life, don't forget about your face! Clean out those Caboodle cases!
