Long vs. Short: my new debate

February 6, 2009 - Bethany Fehlinger and Marjorie Stromberg
If you read my last post, I was deciding whether I should cut my hair short. And if you read my column, you would have found out that I did cut it and did it in honor of my aunts and Nana.
I must admit, I thought short hair would be easier to take care of. Well, I guess I was wrong!
Here are my pros and cons of short and long hair:

With short hair:
ó I use less products.
ó It takes less time to shower, to blow dry.
ó It dries on its own quickly, and I can scrunch in products and go without my hair freezing to my head or me getting a cold.
ó Straightening my hair is fun now.
ó I don't get stuff in my hair accidentally, meaning I don't accidentally spit my toothpaste in it, or spill food on it.
ó It doesn't get in my way when I put on a coat or put a bag on my shoulder.
ó If my hair is messy, I can run my hand through it, do a little shake to my hair and it's back to normal.
ó Two words: cute earrings.
ó My clothes are no longer hidden by my hair, and people actually look at my face now.
Cons:
ó I had to go buy a new brush and straightener because mine were too big.
ó If I choose to blow dry, I get this weird cowlick. Then I am forced to straighten my hair, which takes longer for me to get ready.
ó My hair looks gross after one and a half days (it just can't last the last 12 hours, can it?)
ó Pulling up my hair is a challenge. And I can't work out without my hair out of my face. Then I had to buy headbands to get it out of my face (more money spent).
ó You don't want to see what my hair looks like in the morning.
ó The shedding didn't stop like I thought.

With long hair:
ó I can throw it into a ponytail or bun whenever I wanted.
ó It doesn't always look greasy or gross after not washing for two, sometimes three days.
ó I can curl it, straighten it, do a lot to it.
ó Even though blowdrying took 15 or more minutes, that's all I needed to do.
Cons:
ó I can't walk out with wet hair, or I look messy.
ó It takes a lot of shampoo and hair products to do my hair.
ó If I want to do more than blow dry, it takes a long time to do my hair.
ó It gets caught in everything. Right before cutting, I used to zip my hair into my purse all the time.
ó Static is NOT fun.
ó Constant shedding forced me to clean my bathroom floor every day.

I love my new hair, and I am glad I donated something as a way to honor the women I love and to cope with their loss.
