Sultan of sweat

July 17, 2008 - Jeff Fishbein
I'm not sure I've ever worked in a press box as hot as the one at Williamsport's Winder Field last night, where the Babe Ruth 14-year-olds tournament got under way.

But the box was not as hot as the West End bats, which managed to stifle Mifflin County, the only one of the county's three teams to drop its opener. It means nothing, the state commissioner -- present for the game -- told me. He remembers watching these same kids as 13s overcome a huge deficit in the final inning -- with two out, no less -- to win a state title.

Veteran manager Fred Zook was equally businesslike, simply stating that his club would have to win them all now. I won't be surprised if they do just that.

It was also nice to see some old friends on the opposite bench. The scorekeeper for West End, a wrestling and football coach from Montgomery, was a varsity wrestler I covered when I first got into this business, and his wife works with mine. It was also nice to finally put some faces with names at our sister publication in Williamsport, the Sun-Gazette, while working in the office there after the game.
