The most popular books, movies, and more of 2017

Popular doesn’t always mean great, but it counts for something. Here are the top checkouts from the Juniata County Library in 2017. In parentheses is the total checkouts for 2017.

Movies…

Deepwater Horizon (37), The Girl on the Train (35), Storks (35), A Dog’s Purpose (34), and Trolls (33).

To summarize: The most popular titles and those just below in circulation were big hits in the box offices or family friendly. TV series sets have become popular here but they do not always have crossover appeal or checkout in high numbers because they take time to watch their multiple discs.

Books…

“Never Never” by Candice Fox (28), “Heartbreak Hotel” by Jonathan Kellerman (26), “The Fix” by David Baldacci (23), “No More Bows” by Samantha Cotterill (22), “Against All Odds” by Danielle Steel (21), “Bad Kitty Takes the Test” by Nick Bruel (17), and “Essential Oils” by Susan Curtis (16).

To summarize: More best sellers and useful, current titles (essential oils) top the list. I combined kids books as well as adult fiction and nonfiction.

≤ Mobile Hotspots: 80 total checkouts in the first 6 months! That is over 10 checkouts a month for 10 hotspots. I rarely see them because they are always checked out. They are so easy to use that even those who consider themselves computer illiterate can figure it out in less than 5 minutes.

≤ Public computers. These are not books but are widely and frequently used by patrons of all ages and backgrounds. Employees looking to print pay stubs, eBay sellers posting their listings, kids playing games with friends across the internet, and college students studying for classes find our computers (and Wi-Fi) useful, beneficial, and reliable.

≤ The top 18 most checked out items of 2017 were DVDs. From there is a sprinkle of new adult fiction. Take what you will from these checkout trends. Keep in mind they are the most checked out titles, which doesn’t mean only DVDs were checked out from the library. Our prices are very affordable and our selection is top notch. Convenience and availability counts for something to today’s consumers and library users. The library has over 50,000 items and surely has a book, movie, or resource relevant and useful to you.
