“Trump: A Graphic Novel” and “Bernie: A Graphic Novel,” both by Ted Rall

When I visited a hole-in-the-wall independent book store I noticed these two books. I immediately knew I needed to get these for the library. Both books tell the story of each politician, threw their upbringings in different boroughs of New York to their current positions of president and U.S. Senator, respectively. Both books have illuminating illustrations and descriptions and do not come off as hard-line polemics. Any adult looking to complete the graphic novel square in your summer reading bingo card can pick one of these books up in the new young adult section.

“The Founder” (starring Michael Keaton)

I never knew the original story of McDonald’s until I watched this movie. Two brothers in San Bernardino, California start a fast food restaurant that is unique for their time (the year is 1954). They ask customers to come to the counter to order and receive their food, instead of curbside or in-car ordering. Ray Croc, a struggling milkshake machine salesman, receives an order from McDonald’s and when visiting them he is blown away by their labor efficiency and overwhelming customer response. What follows is the railroading of the two brothers by Kroc as he coups the business model into a billion-dollar company around the world. A tough movie to watch as the story unfolds, it has me thinking of the restaurant differently now when I get a Diet Coke from them. This movie can be found in the new DVD section.

“Two Paths: America Divided or United” by John Kasich

John Kasich in 2016 was similar to Jon Huntsman in 2012. Both ran as Republicans but didn’t fit the party mold of a contemporary Republican. Both spoke eloquently but not with complex terminology. Both spoke with civility and did not yell at their opponents. Unfortunately both did not make it that far in their primaries and were not able to secure their party’s nomination. When Ohio Governor John Kasich ran for president, his powerful message of hope and togetherness struck a chord with American voters. In Two Paths: America Divided or United, he carries that message forward by reflecting on the tumultuous 2016 campaign, sharing his concerns for America and his hopes for our future, and sounding a clarion call to reason and purpose, humility and dignity, righteousness and calm. To be sure, the full story of the 2016 presidential race will be written over time, but to understand what it was to be on the front lines of one of the most divisive and corrosive campaign battlegrounds in history, readers won’t find a richer, more thoughtful firsthand account than this one — a frank, refreshing assessment of the American dynamic and a clear path we might follow toward a more promising tomorrow.

You can find these titles in the new adult nonfiction section.
