“White Tears,” by Hari Kunzru

Seth and Carter both live in New York City. They both love music, but for different reasons. Seth uses it to look to the future while Carter can cherish the past. Neither seem to live in the moment. They come across a blues musician playing in Central Park and record his work, uploading it to the internet and causing a copyright flairup. End of story? No, it is just starting. Blue’s music is chock full of heartbreak, deceit, and sometimes murder. Seth and Carter end up facing the real origins of the song they recorded.

“Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know about Success Is (Mostly) Wrong,” by Eric Barker

I love lists. I enjoy writing to-do lists, crossing off things on those lists, and reading books and websites that have clear and succinct lists. Every Sunday I look forward to Eric’s email newsletter that covers similar topics to his new book and are full of lists. Recent topics have been “This Is How To Be Productive: 4 Secrets From The Stoics,” “This Is How To Be More Self-Aware: 5 Secrets From Research,” and others on how to avoid burnout, how to have a great morning ritual, and how to say no without feeling guilty. Eric’s book is both research based and highly accessible, making it a great read for self-help readers and non-self-help readers who just want a quick and clear list. “Little One,” by Jo Weaver

Each season in life can teach us an awful lot. Winter shows us how to keep warm. Spring shows us the many parts of nature that come into bloom. Much of what we learn, though, is taught to us by our parents or those close to us. “Little One” follows a bear and its cub coming out of winter, witness spring, and prepare to face the yearly cycle again. The black-and-white illustrations are lucid and visceral. A great story that fits with every season in the year.
