The selfless people make me proud to live here

To the editor:

As the holiday season fast approaches, yes, it’s wonderful giving gifts to our loved ones but we remind ourselves of the true meaning of Christmas, the holy birth of the baby Jesus.

In one of my favorite Christmas carols we sing the lyrics “peace on earth good will toward men.” I would like to share what I have experienced over the past several months.

In September the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society, owners of the Lewistown Train Station, hosted an open house at the station with over 400 people in attendance. It was a wonderful event. As the eastbound train approached the station, many folks boarded except a Penn State student who was traveling to Harrisburg to spend his birthday with his girlfriend didn’t quite make it. He was so disappointed. Hearing what had happened, a young man from our area, Tony Bowsman, volunteered to drive him to Harrisburg. The student was so appreciative of this very generous gesture.

Two weeks ago, several local churches held their annual giving tree project which provides hundreds of children in our area Christmas gifts that they would not have received otherwise.

A week ago Friday, the Lewistown Police Department in partnership with the Kiwanis and the criminal justice students from South Hills Business School filled three police cruisers with food items for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and the LUMINA Center donated by folks in our area.

These are just a few examples of why I am so proud to be a resident of the Juniata River Valley. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.
