Voting for Book is chance to buck two-party system

To the editor:

Have you ever walked into the voting booth not feeling very excited because you know it’s going to be a choice between a Democrat or a Republican? Many people don’t even vote at all for this very same reason. Even if there is a third-party candidate on the ballot, people don’t vote for them because they feel that it will help the opposing party, and in all reality, it does help the other party because it is one less vote for the D or the R.

This election is very unique for the 82nd District. There is not a Democrat in the race. You can be a member of either party and vote for the independent candidate without fear of giving your vote to the other party. Maybe you are a lifelong union Democrat and you see your party going a little bit too far to the extreme left. Maybe you don’t like to see your party leaders calling for incivility. Please consider voting for Elizabeth Book, an independent candidate.

Or maybe you are a lifelong Republican and you are sick and tired of seeing the people that you voted for not really doing anything. They never stick their neck out for you because their party bosses and the money from lobbyists is more important that you are. Our country is run by career politicians, right down to the local level. Money flows in like water in the swamp. Fortunately, Elizabeth won’t have party bosses to deal with and she says that she will not take money from lobbyists. That means that she will have more time to answer your phone calls. She won’t have to spend much time dealing with lobbyists trying to bribe her to vote a certain way on a bill. She is a true fiscal conservative and is running a very low budget campaign.

Unlike myself, Elizabeth is not a rigid ideologue. She and I don’t agree on every little issue, but we do agree on big issues. The first question that I asked her was if she thought that a Christian bakery should have to bake a cake for a gay wedding. She replied no. She agreed that the gay couple should just go to a different bakery.

My next question was about property taxes. She said that they are extremely unfair and she supports a plan floating around the state legislature that would eliminate them.

Finally, I had to ask her about guns and the Second Amendment. She replied that she was never really around guns growing up and didn’t know much about them, so she decided to educate herself. Over the course of last spring and summer, Elizabeth has spoken to law enforcement, gun shop owners, leaders of pro-gun groups and even a lawyer that specializes in the Second Amendment. She feels now that we do not need any more gun laws and that she fully supports the Second Amendment. I even attended a gun rights rally in Harrisburg back in April and Elizabeth was one of the speakers.

Please go to the polls on Nov. 6 and help us elect a truly-independent candidate. To summarize as to why she is running for office, I would have to say that she is sick and tired of career politicians on both sides of the swamp wasting our tax dollars without even answering our phone calls first. Vote independent. It’s about time. It could be a long time before we have this chance again.
