Second Amendment is still right that protects all others

To the editor:

This letter is in response to Mr. Geedey’s letter in the March 24-25 Lewistown Sentinel.

I would like to clarify a couple of points. When I said in my letter that Republicans and conservatives were the supporters of the legislation that ended segregation, that is exactly what I meant. Most supporters were Christians and born-again Christians and tended to be conservative in their political views.

The actual vote was in the House. Democrats had 152 yes votes and 96 no votes. That is about 39 percent no votes. For Republicans it was 138 yes votes and only 34 no votes. That is about 20 percent no votes. In the Senate, it was Democrats 44 yes votes and 23 no votes — that is about 60 percent yes. And for the Republicans it was 27 yes and only six no and that is about 80 percent yes.

As you said, there has been an evolution in political views over the years. In fact, with John F. Kennedy’s political views, he would have had to run as a Republican today considering the far-left views of today’s Democratic Party.

As for the AR platform rifle being the No. 1 choice of those who commit mass murder, I submit to you that most mass killings were accomplished by handguns and bolt-action rifles, not to mention explosives. How many people died in the Oklahoma City bombing? Not to mention all the property damage.

Consider the Fort Hood shooting or the father-son sniping team in the D.C. area.

Then there was Whitman in the clock tower at the University of Texas who killed 16 people and wounded 31 with bolt-action rifles and handguns after killing two with a knife. Not an AR platform in the bunch.

I have already spoken about the issue of bump stocks and I said I see no reason for anyone to have them. But the Obama administration said they were legal.

As for the NRA being involved in politics, it’s one of the reasons I am a member of the NRA. I want the Second Amendment protected. It is the one right that protects all the other rights.

Left-wing politics in this county are so far out there that there is a large portion of those on the left who want nothing less than total confiscation of all guns from the civilian population and not to protect the lives of innocents. It is to give them complete control of the entire population. They will be happy to accomplish this goal a piece at a time, but what they want is for all civilian guns to go away.

For those out there that think this would be a good thing, I submit the following. I think it is something for all to reflect upon.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents were unable to defend themselves and were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and eliminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964 and from 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970 and from 1970 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956 and from 1975 to 1977, 1 million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Fifty-six million defenseless people were rounded up and exterminated in the 20th century because of gun control.

You will not see this date on the evening news or hear politicians, especially those on the left, disseminating this information.

Yes, what Mr. Geedey said about mental illness is true. It is not always detected ahead of time, but at the same time, just taking away guns of any kind is no guarantee that some deranged person will not find some way to inflict mass murder or casualties if that is their intent.

There are just too many choices of methods to be used. Why should law-abiding citizens have their rights diminished or removed on a maybe?

As I have said before and I will say again, one thing that can be a game changer in all situations is for all Christians in this world to do all they can to promote a greater knowledge of God’s Word to all people in the hope that it will lead to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. That is the one thing that will not only change their lives, but will also save their eternal soul.
