Right now, GOP is party of Donald Trump, Roy Moore

To the editor:

I am simply amazed at the hypocrisy of the Dec. 9 Sentinel editorial on sexual harassment. Who do they point to as guilty of these offenses? Democrat Sen. Al Franken, Democrat representative John Conyers, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, and NBC’s Matt Lauer — democrats, Hollywood, and the media, favorite targets of the right and President Trump.

Alongside the editorial, perhaps to reinforce its argument, is a political cartoon on sexual harassment with the faces of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, Al Franken, and John Conyers holding signs that says “learning that sexual misconduct has consequences.”

Sometimes this behavior goes on for many years and even covered-up by supporters according to the editorial writer who chose as an example (I almost fell off my chair) Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings.

I believe the American people have two people on their mind that have not faced the consequences of their sexual misconduct and it is not Thomas Jefferson.

Even though The Sentinel does not want to face the elephant in the room (or is it two elephants?), we must.

In Alabama the voters have a choice between an accused child molester Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, a state attorney who successfully prosecuted members of the KKK who killed four young girls in church. Seven or eight women have come forward with credible claims that when Moore was in his 30s he preyed on teenage girls, one as young as 14. Twice he was forced from his position as judge of the Alabama Supreme Court by Republicans because he did not uphold the law. He also believes that the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center was God’s wrath on America, homosexuals should be outlawed and Muslims should not be allowed in Congress.

The other big elephant in the room — missed by the Sentinel editorial — is of course the president of the United States, Donald Trump. I think at last count it was 18 women who have come forward with stories of unwanted sexual predation by Trump. We have on tape in his own words that he is OK with sexual abuse of women. I am not allowed to put in writing what his actual words are because they are so graphic.

Donald Trump campaigns and asks voters in Alabama to vote for an accused pedophile. The RNC provides funding. Republican leader Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan and most of the Republicans in Congress continue to support Trump and are mostly silent about Moore. The Republican Party is now the party of Donald Trump and his base which will support him no matter what scurrilous thing he says or does.

A few Republicans have stood up to Trump’s hateful, divisive, reckless and incoherent policies and behavior but most are more concerned about the next election than speaking out. They have created a monster they can’t control.

Regardless of Tuesday’s election in Alabama, serial sexual predator Donald Trump and child molester Roy Moore are now the face of the Republican Party unless good men and women in the GOP decide to put country and decency above party.
