Mainstream media doesn’t ‘make Trump’s scandals up’

To the editor:

Mr. Molek’s recent letter to The Lewistown Sentinel regarding media bias reminds me of an article I just read by Terry Heaton, a former executive producer of Pat Robertson’s The 700 Club. The article is entitled “How the Religious Right Pioneered Propaganda as News,” and is from June 16, 2017.

Heaton writes, “Americans find themselves drowning in this unseemly and childish battle for the soul of news and information purveyance, and the undiscussed problem is that the entire mess is built on the false narrative of ‘the liberal (elite) press.’ I know, because I was among the people who advanced the concept and shaped the discussion in the early ’80s, as senior and executive producer of Pat Robertson’s flagship television program The 700 Club.”

He continues to describe how the word liberal “became the central weapon in a strategy that involved attacking the messenger instead of changing the message. … That political strategy has been so effective to date that it has given birth to the idea that mainstream news is actually ‘fake news’ and not to be believed in the administration of President Donald Trump. The number of people who now believe this falsehood is staggering, and it poses a real threat to our democracy.”

The truth is, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc., are not making Trump’s scandals up. They are accurately reporting his presidency.

If it is hard for you to continue to support a man with so many scandals, well, that is understandable. If it is hard to stomach the fact that you voted for a man who has broken so many of his promises, I get that. But just don’t try to pretend that it is the “liberal media” making stuff up and bashing Trump just so you can stay in denial about who our president really is and what he and his family members have actually done.
