Toomey should remember for whom he is working

To the editor:

I am so disappointed and frustrated with our Republican senator in D.C. Why is Senator Pat Toomey not listening to his constituents? Why is he taking our taxpayer money for his very good salary, yet refusing to hold town hall meetings? No other job would allow him to behave this way.

This week, Senator Pat Toomey voted for Betsy DeVos to become secretary of education despite her lack of qualifications and despite the fact that many of his constituents, Democrats as well as Republicans, opposed her nomination.

Many Pennsylvania residents took the time to call, email, protest and comment on Toomey’s Facebook posts, yet he ignored us. He ignored the more than 28,000 replies in the comments section of his Facebook post, many of which included Pennsylvania ZIP codes. He ignored his constituents and voted for an unqualified secretary of education just because she donated $60,500 to his campaign funds. That is unacceptable.

Pennsylvania taxpayers deserve representatives who listen to us and who care about our concerns and our children’s education more than they care about campaign donations. Despite her donation, Pennsylvania taxpayers pay Senator Toomey’s salary, not Betsy DeVos. Senator Toomey needs to remember this. We deserve better.
