Joe Sestak is best choice for U.S. senator

To the editor:

Attention all Democrats! The primary election is April 26. We have several highly qualified, experienced, educated, accomplished candidates running for office in 2016. We need your vote to secure their success.

Admiral Joe Sestak is one those candidates and is running for U.S. senator. His resume is exceptional, listing diverse and extensive accomplishments.

Joe is a native Pennsylvanian. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and Harvard with a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government. His 31-year military accomplishments include: achieving a three-star admiral status; member of the Politico-Military Assessment of Joint Chiefs of Staff; Command in Mediterranean and War Command in Persian Gulf; and Director of Defense Policy for the White House National Security Council and Anti-Terrorism Unit.

Sestak’s was a U.S. Congressman from 2007-2011. He was named most productive member in his class by the majority leader.

As Congressman, he helped veterans by voting in support and got passage of the largest VA funding bill for wounded warriors and introduced a VA transparency bill.

Women received his support with his vote favoring and passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act in the House and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

When he voted yes to pass bills lowering Medicare drug prices and Medicare solvency until 2026, the Social Security Fairness Act and Elder Abuse Act, senior citizens benefited.

In 2007, Joe Sestak was a strong advocate for education. He voted to increase education funding and student loan interest rate reductions by removing the “bank middleman” for federal student loans.

Joe believes that when the middle class is doing well, we all do well. To help the working class, he voted to pass the minimum wage increase, unemployment insurance extension, the ACA, the Consumer Protection Act and Wall Street reform. He helped get passed a transportation and infrastructure bill and secured the funding for highway development and public transportation.

Sestak’s was also involved in the successful passage of: a balanced budget resolution and PAYGO requirement to balance the books of the government; enhanced homeland security; and tax breaks for small businesses.

Joe was a Professor as well. He taught classes in “Ethical Leadership” and “Restoring the American Dream” at Carnegie Mellon, Cheyney University, Dickinson College, the Army War College and Penn State Law.

Admiral Sestak cares about Pennsylvania. Before running for senator, he walked 422 miles across Pa. to talk with Pennsylvanians about our needs, issues and concerns. Last August, he attended the Mifflin County Democratic Committee’s picnic, even knowing there was no promise of any campaign contributions. Sestak was warm and engaging, genuine and authentic. He is down to earth and not hubris, despite his worldliness experience, stature in the Navy and in Congress. Calls to his office have been returned by him personally. He is the real deal advocate, who truly cares about his constituents. He will work for us, not for himself.

I encourage all Democrats to get out to vote on April 26 and make your choice Admiral Joe Sestak for U.S. Senator!
