Proposes natural gas tax to start clean-up fund

To the editor:

When the hard coal mining industry went defunct, it left behind abandoned breakers, huge culm banks, poisoned waterways, scarred landscapes and other environmental issues that had to be cleaned up by the taxpayers who didn’t reap any of the profits from old King Coal.

The same thing is happening in Pennsylvania with the natural gas industry, and when the gas is gone, so will the owners be gone, and they won’t think twice about the environmental mess they leave behind.

Governor Corbett and his loyal followers are dead wrong. Pennsylvania needs to establish an environmental cleanup fund now, and it should be funded with a steep tax on the natural gas industry.

Yes, providing good jobs and paying taxes are important, but it is equally important to establish an environmental cleanup fund.
