Thanks to neighbors who help others stay warm

To the editor:

The fourth annual Walk for Warmth was held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at Kishoquillas Park. The event was sponsored by MCS Bank in partnership with the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata, and the Mifflin-Juniata Human Services Department. This year’s event raised $7,180 dollars.

All funds raised during the Walk for Warmth support the local Mifflin-Juniata Energy Bank. The MJ Energy Bank targets people who have exhausted all federal and state programs and are in crisis. Through the Coalition of HOPES, the MJ Energy Bank streamlines support, guiding our citizens through the many resources available while avoiding duplication or abuse of services. Over $29,000 has been raised with these four walks helping more than 100 people.

Thanks to the many walkers who braved the cold but sunny day and walked. These walkers collected pledges from the community and churches and made this event so successful. The walkers were young and old and some were furry! Some walked around the park once; some just kept going and going and going.

A special thanks goes out to Dunkin Donuts for providing hot chocolate and coffee and Kish Printing & Promotional Products, Inc. for helping make our signs and pledge envelopes. We also need to thank Dale Wilburn for volunteering to provide us with music that invigorated the walkers and the event coordinators.

This event reminds all of us that real people in our community count on and benefit from the services that United Way of Mifflin-Juniata supports. We appreciate everyone’s support.
