Thank you to community for a successful event
To the editor:
On Wednesday, March 12 the auditorium of Mifflin County High School was filled with the magnificent sounds of the United States Army Concert Band and Soldiers Chorus. The quality of the music and the sense of patriotism were both refreshing and heartwarming for a crowd of 1,300 people in attendance.
The performers in these ensembles, many of whom are graduates of the Eastman School of Music and the Julliard, are exemplary musicians who are also soldiers and know they could be called to serve if needed.
As the organizer of the event, I would like to extend my thank-you to the Board of Directors of the Mifflin County School District for granting us the use of this space for this fine performance.
Eight choral students, and seven instrumental students from Mifflin County High School had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being able to perform with the groups during John Philip Sousa’s “El Capitan.” An honor guard, comprised of four Eagle Scouts from MCHS, presented the colors at the beginning of the performance. Special thanks to Paul Grego and Jon Chester for organizing this group of fine young men.
During the school day, Maj. Dwayne Wilburn, the Deputy Commander of the ensemble, worked with the Concert Choir as part of the educational outreach the Army extends.
The always touching “Armed Forces Salute,” was a special moment during the performance as each branch of the military was acknowledged during the piece and, those in attendance who had served, stood to the grateful applause of the audience.
I have been personally quite humbled to have been, and continue to be, the recipient of countless kind words of thanks since the performance. It has become quite clear to me how meaningful this night was for members of our community both in support of the armed services and in support of musical excellence.
The pride I feel in our community for such a successful evening is sincerely and greatly appreciated.
