Group grateful for efforts to make Pro-Life March event a success

To the editor:

We would like to thank the following people for their professional contributions to the success of our Lewistown Pro-Life March on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. First, the Rev. Bernard Carpenter for the use of the Bethel AME Church Center and speakers Jonathon Hayes, Congressman Thomas Marino, state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, Father William Weary, the Rev. Michael Bailey, Cindy Mansberger and Micaiah Bilger.

A capacity crowd was at the Lewistown pro-life March site to hear stirring speeches by them. As this week is the “9 Days for Life” set forth by the Catholic Bishops of the United States, the speakers were right in tune with the week. The crowd was supported by the speaker’s words and the key information was to not get discouraged even while the United States has wallowed for 41 years in Roe v. Wade.

Speaker Jonathon Hayes’ statement of, “The pro-choice movement is not founded on joy, and thus it should not be surprising that anger, not joy, is shown when they argue their case” describes pro-choice attitudes. For those of us who have been around for years in pro-life we can attest to that statement when we meet and see “pro-choice” people cursing at us,

Additional thank-yous are in order for the wonderful staff of The Sentinel, as without them the march would have failed: Ruth Eddy, publisher; Brad Siddons, assistant managing editor, who reviews most of our letters; Julianne Cahill, religion editor, for writing about us; Matt Bolich, advertising director, for help with our ads; and also to Frank Jost, managing editor of the newspaper.

Mifflin and Juniata counties are fortunate to have a dynamic newspaper and A-1 political representation. Otherwise we would be reading “New York Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that pro-life activists along with anti-gay activists, and supporters of the Second Amendment, are not welcome in his state.”

During a radio interview on Friday, Cuomo pointed out that Republicans were in the midst of a schism, where conservatives worked against moderate Republicans … Fortunately, we can read “Republican Party Chairman: GOP is Proudly Pro-Life on Abortion” instead. (

Next week is the RNC Winter Meeting, and this time around it is being held in Washington, D.C. As many Life News readers know, that coincides with the annual March for Life.

As a proud, pro-life Republican, I saw this as a great opportunity for us to participate in this meaningful event. So we adjusted the schedule and pushed back our meetings and official business to allow our members who want to participate to join in the march. We even rented a bus so that they can get to the rally.
